For families arranging a cremation, now or ahead of time

A clear price,
at a hard time.

If someone close to you has died, we’re sorry for your loss. Read at your own pace; the numbers are here when you need them.

The national median for direct cremation is $2,750 when the funeral home provides the container. A funeral with a viewing and cremation is $6,280. Crematories.net shows that gap beside each state’s cremation rate, and shows a funeral home’s price only when its own General Price List is published.

  • The same direct cremation, with the container the funeral home supplies. Half of the surveyed funeral homes charged less, and half charged more. This is not a quote for a home in your city.

These are national medians. A local funeral home can charge less or more. The number to compare is the one on its General Price List.

Three things that help, one at a time.

  1. Separate the package

A home that offers direct cremation has to price it on its General Price List. A viewing, embalming, and a ceremony are what push a cremation toward the $6,280 median.

  2. Read the list

The FTC Funeral Rule says a funeral home must hand you a General Price List in person, and the direct-cremation price already includes the basic services fee.

  3. Compare homes

When a funeral home publishes its General Price List, its price appears beside the others in its city, sorted by the direct cremation price.

National price medians are from the NFDA 2023 General Price List Study, published in the 2024 NFDA Cremation & Burial Report. State cremation rates are that report’s 2025 projections, not a funeral home’s current price.
